How to Use Your Surf Balance Board (Without Breaking Anything – Including the Kids)

Let’s be honest — getting out for a surf when you’ve got young kids is like Christmas sometimes. Between nappy changes, work calls, snack requests, and trying to remember if you actually brushed your teeth today, time in the water feels like a rare treat.

You’re dreaming of clean lines, salty hair, and that feeling of flow — but more often than not, you’re stuck behind a pram or pushing a swing at the park. And your groms? They’re curious. They want to do what Mum and Dad do… but where do you start?

You want to keep the stoke alive. Stay connected to the ocean. Keep your body moving. Maybe help your kids find their feet before they ever touch a surfboard. But life’s busy. You don’t have hours to train or the energy for complicated routines. And you definitely don’t want a product that ends up shoved in the shed with the rest of the “we’ll get around to it” stuff.

You’re after something fun, practical, and low-key that helps you (and your kids) stay surf-ready — without needing a break in the swell or a full babysitting roster.

Say g’day to your new surf training sidekick — the Coastal Tribe Surf Balance Board.

It’s made to fit into family life — lounge rooms, backyards, even the shed if that’s where you retreat for five minutes of peace. It’s simple to use, fun for the kids, and surprisingly addictive (don’t say we didn’t warn you).

How to get started:

Chuck it on a soft surface — carpet, yoga mat, or a rug will do. It helps soften any bails and gives the roller a bit more grip.

Go barefoot — better feel and better balance. Plus, shoes on a balance board just feel weird.

Hold onto the couch or wall at first — or if you’re fancy, have your partner spot you (bonus bonding moment).

For the groms — start slow: sitting, kneeling, then standing. Let them play. Make it a game. It’s about fun, not perfection.

Keep it supervised — just like the beach, a bit of common sense goes a long way.

We build our boards with care — solid timber, cork rollers, and a whole lotta testing in the backyard with our own kids. But we’re still shaping this thing (literally), and your feedback helps us get better. Every comment, idea, and video of your little one shredding helps build the next version.

Ready to give it a crack? Here’s what we recommend:

1. Leave it out — if it’s visible, it’ll get used. Promise.

2. Make it a ritual — before dinner, after bath time, or when the kids are losing it and you need to burn energy.

3. Film your progress — it’s pretty special seeing your little ones get more confident each day (and it’s great blackmail material for their 21st).

4. Join the Tribe — share your thoughts, send your clips, help us grow this community of salty legends raising the next generation of surfers.

Early release boards are limited — we’re still hand-finishing each one and testing with families like yours. So if you’re thinking about it, now’s the time.
